About Keihoku
Located in Ishiyama district, Keihoku is surrounded by beautiful mountains with a rich history of stone masonry. It is a municipal high school with 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students, split into 6 groups of each. Keihoku Commercial High School was established in 1941, and has reached its 80th anniversary with more than 20,000 graduates.
The name of the school, “Keihoku,” means “to open up the north” a name from the days when Hokkaido was being developed and modernized. The school emblem depicts Mercury, the patron god of merchants and travelers in Roman mythology.
Currently, many social resources are incorporated into the school's educational activities. Students experience internships and other opportunities before deciding on employment or higher education. In addition, there are many initiatives to prepare students for various high proficiency certification exams, such as the Nissho Bookkeeping Examination and the Practical English Proficiency Test.
Keihoku Learning
In subjects such as commerce, English, and mathematics, students are carefully taught in small groups with a focus in problem-based research and related classes. Students plan and participate in local product development, volunteer activities, and community-centered exploration activities. Students have the opportunity to learn about the stock market firsthand through virtual stocks, as is typical of commercial high schools.
The school is also the lead school for the Sapporo City entrepreneurship education program for high school students, "Miraski!” It is a program for high school students in Sapporo, through which students can get up to 9 credits in “Career Education,” a subject that takes place outside of the school to provide hands-on experience.
Foreign language education is helped by the two ALTs from English-speaking countries at the school. The students have English classes (such as Cross-Cultural Education) in addition to Chinese, and Korean language classes. Students also have the opportunity to work with students from Portland, U.S.A. as part of the international exchange program.
